Can I win the Buy Box without FBA?

Yes, via "Seller Fulfilled Prime" (SFP) or having excellent FBM metrics. However, FBA offers are heavily favored by the algorithm. If you are FBM, you usually have to price significantly lower than FBA sellers to win.

What happens if I raise my price too much?

If your price is significantly higher than the List Price or prices on other marketplaces (Walmart), Amazon will suppress the Buy Box entirely. We monitor this ceiling to keep you compliant.
